The Driffield Brass Band Gala was held on Whit Monday 6th June 1870 on Kirby's Field and a bicycle race was held at the event. The race attracted seven riders and was "twice round the field" with a first prize of 20s.
The Driffield Times advertised a "monstre" evening gala on the 29th July 1870 at Kirby's Field, which adjoined the Driffield Agricultural Showground. The first event of the gala, at 6pm, was a grand handicap bicycle race "will be contested for a valuable silver cup, second prize 5 shillings. Entrance 1 shilling at which time the colours must be declared".* This race was followed by a second bicycle race, then by a Grand bicycle circus. In the evening there was a ball in a large marquee lit by gas, with a brass band, duettists Madame Clarendon and Mr C Montgomery, and "the famous Shelley hand bell ringers." Admission to the field cost one shilling for ladies and gentlemen and sixpence for working classes and children. This was probably the last bicycle race meeting on Kirby's Field.
* Racing cyclists at this time wore silk outfits a bit like jockeys, hence the word ‘colours'
